The DWA has been interested in Andean species of birds that are seldom and/or successfully displayed in zoos, possibly due to lack of information about their physiology adaptations to live at high altitudes and the problems faced when transferred to exhibits at low altitudes. In 2011, we started support for a research project dealing with the hemoglobin adaptation of Andean birds, such as Torrent ducks and Andean geese. The project was developed by a researcher from the University of Alaska in Fairbanks and his coworkers from CORBIDI (a local NGO) in Lima, Peru with vast experience with Peruvian birds.
