Birds

Birds in the Mundo Maya exhibit range in size from numerous species of tiny hummingbirds to majestic storks and formidable eagles.

Living at the lower level are Burrowing, Screech and Barred owls. The Maya believed that owls were messengers between humans and the divine. As the exhibits ascend, Ocellated turkeys forage below as the Spectacled owl watches overhead. Tinamous share an exhibit with rabbits and owls. From the carefully placed feeders to the blooming flowers at all levels, hummingbirds, euphonias, tanagers, dacnis and fruitcrows fly freely throughout the eight-story tall exhibit searching for food. Graceful Jabiru storks have a view of the noisy but entertaining flamingos. Woodpeckers add to the sound; macaws add to the color. High in the canopy are raptors, such as the Ornate hawk-eagle, the Black hawk eagle and the Guiana crested eagle, carefully watching from above.
