South Africa

The outdoor Cape of Good Hope exhibit is home to a colony of Black-footed penguins. The 30,000-gallon display is surrounded with an array of native aloe and cactus-like plants. Also enjoying the outdoor habitat are Eastern yellow hornbills and Rock hyraxes. Although they resemble rodents, hyraxes are related to manatees.

Located at the end of the South Africa display are various species that represent the island of Madagascar. Some of the world’s best masters of disguise can be seen here during the summer months. Geckos that resemble leaves or vegetation and chameleons that can match any color may be difficult to discriminate from their surroundings. The display also houses turtles and frogs such as the Painted mantella.
